Paolo Nutini
Sunny Side Up
Atlantic. 12 tracks.
Rating: 2 stars (out of 5).

WTF?  Surely that must be the reaction of many upon first hearing Paolo Nutini’s new album, an impassioned if jarring tribute to musical genres way older than the singer-songwriter himself. The bonny Scotsman follows his winning pop-centric debut, These Streets, with the most diverse assemblage of songs released by a single artist this year, perhaps this decade.  The question is, does Sunny Side Up go over easy, or is it ultimately more of a scrambled mess?

Empire of the Sun
Walking on a Dream
Virgin. 10 tracks.
Rating: 3½ stars (out of 5).

Is Empire of the Sun for real? The Australian dance-pop duo-- a side project for Luke Steele of The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore of Pnau— offers more questions than answers on its debut CD.  At first blush, EotS comes off like a Down Under knock-off of MGMT. Steele’s singing voice is a reed-thin ringer for Andrew VanWyngarden’s, and both twosomes boast similar outré sartorial styles—Steele’s and Littlemore’s fashion sense might be described as psychedelic Chinoiserie by way of Michael Jackson. The tunes on Walking on a Dream, however, reveal an entirely different and unexpected set of influences.  Whereas MGMT bears the stamp of art-rock forebears such as David Bowie and The Flaming Lips, EotS shows mad love for... the Thompson Twins and OMD.  And maybe even a little for Johnny Hates Jazz.  If that sounds silly, it is.  It’s also deliciously tongue-in-cheek.  I think.
