Daniel Merriweather
Love & War
J Records/Allido. 12 Tracks.
Rating: 2½ stars (out of 5)

Of all the slammin’ cuts on Version, producer Mark Ronson’s 2007 party platter of covers by Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and other trendies, perhaps the slammin’-est was “Stop Me Medley,” a previously unthinkable, suddenly perfect mash-up of the Smiths’ “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before” and the Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.”  Fusing majestic ‘60s orchestral pop with dance beats snatched from the late ‘80s Manchester/Hacienda scene, Ronson created a dynamic backdrop for the vocal theatrics of Daniel Merriweather, his then-unknown Australian protégé. Merriweather’s lush, emotion-sodden croon conjured images of a haughty glam-soul diva in lamé and platform heels, or at the very least, glitter eye shadow.

Florence and the Machine
Lungs
Universal Island. 13 Tracks.
Rating: 4 stars (out of 5)

Introducing the most aptly named album of the year.  Lungs, the debut effort by London-based singer Florence Welch, is about many things, theatricality, emotional violence and girl power among them.  But mainly it’s about Welch’s sometimes frighteningly robust voice, a pneumatic wonder that that hits with stunning force even as she sings about being a “rabbit-hearted girl frozen in the headlights.”  (No, I’m not buying it either.)
